The Killens Pond Nature Center design complements the surrounding environment rather than interfering with it. This new, 2-story, 8,158 square foot Nature Center was designed to be LEED® Silver Certified in keeping with the natural setting of this 66-acre park. The building is on an existing slope overlooking Killens Pond and includes a walk-out lower level, a first floor lobby and gallery space with two outdoor decks, a rain collection trough and other related facilities. Some of the environmentally-friendly features of the new building are rainwater recovery and reuse, geothermal heating and cooling and on-site wastewater treatment. The open design provides exceptional day-lighting and views. The lower level corridor, with a wall of glass on one side and a wall of stone and masonry on the other, provides substantial natural heat retention.
