"Structural Use of Recycled Plastics in Bridges" and
"How to Succeed with FCS Certified and Recycled Wood and Achieve Wood-Related LEED Credits."

5:30 to 7:30 pm
Carpenter's Hall
320 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106

This program is worth 2 AIA LUs (HSW)

Speakers:
Mr. Doug Patterson of the CWPA will discuss why forest certification is important and describe efforts to balance environmental performance, social responsibility, and economic viability in certified well-managed forests. Doug will relate the progress of the sustainable forestry movement and the evolution of forest certification over the past decade. Mr. Patterson's talk will also highlight lesser known species and grade issues. He will also present tools and tactics for successfully specifying and sourcing certified wood and achieving wood-related credits under LEED.

Stubby Warmbold from the Urban Forestry Program will discuss their work to salvage and use urban wood to create products such as flooring, molding, timber framing, historical restorations, furniture and case goods. Stubby will outline the process from "stump to finished product," describing how skilled Amish craftsmen turn salvaged wood from NJ and PA into finished products.

Mr. Jim Kerstein of Polywood will talk on structural uses of recycled plastics. Mr. Kerstein founded Polywood, Inc. in 1996 in response to environmental issues such as excess landfills and waste plastics. As a relatively new industry, less than 12 years old, advances have seen the industry re-create itself every few years. The most important advance, occurring just within the last few years, is the creation of "structural" quality lumber. Jim will discuss past projects including fishing piers, wetland observation platforms and bridges. The future of structural plastic lumber is limitless and Jim will talk about and give examples of new projects using 100% recycled plastic parts.
