Sustainable design was practiced in the UK and Europe well before it became popular in the United States. Many of the factors driving sustainable design and low-energy buildings in Europe are unique; however, much of what has been learned can be utilized in this country. One of the fundamental challenges in the Delaware Valley is to build on the experiences gained by the early adopters of sustainable design and tailor them to the unique aspects of our local climate, culture and life-style. Guy Battle will present case studies of projects throughout the UK and the US and relate the lessons learned in these projects to the Delaware Valley and the Northeast United States. Join us for a discussion on the state of the art in low-energy buildings and sustainable design as practiced by one of the foremost authorities in the field. Case studies will include examples of site harvested energy, mixed mode and natural ventilation, use of Computational Fluid Dynamics, day lighting and high-performance envelopes.

Guy Battle is an Environmental and Building Services Engineer who has been involved in a wide range of low-energy projects throughout Europe and the US. He is a founding partner of the multi-disciplinary consulting engineering and landscape design firm Battle McCarthy, headquartered in London, UK. The practice specializes in the integrated engineering design of low-energy buildings, assisting the design team to create high-quality internal and external environments with the minimum use of energy and resources.
