Friday, October 3, 2003 11:00 AM to approximately 3:00 PM Continuing Education Credits: Join us for a tour of the tour of the Homasote Company production facility in West Trenton, New Jersey and a lunchtime presentation of the exciting new video, "Rethinking Materials in the Context of LEED." Established in 1909, Homasote Company is the "grandfather" of green building and packaging products and is the oldest manufacturer of structural building and packaging products from recycled material in the United States. Each year approximately 65,000,000 pounds of waste paper are diverted from the waste stream to be turned into sustainable Homasote products at the West Trenton production facility. Come and see Homasotes closed-loop system that recycles all process water, dust, scrap, and product rejects to virtually eliminate its own waste stream. Homasote building products contain up to 98% post consumer waste paper by weight and Homasote time tested products are used for sound control in floor and wall systems; tack-able and acoustical wall surfaces, structural and high performance roof systems and many other sustainable building products. The lunchtime presentation of "Rethinking Materials in the Context of LEED", the exciting new video from award winning filmmaker Tom Keiter, covers the LEED materials criteria and the concept of "Integrated Design" and how it is essential to produce successful LEED projects at the same or lower cost as conventional construction. Other topics covered in the presentation are the multi-function role of materials in LEED and an overview of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) as it relates to materials and the future of LEED. The video presentation features renown, environmentally conscious designers and LEED/USGBC consultants/instructors as well as significant input from the presenter. Tom Keiter, the filmmaker who put this presentation together is the lead consultant/producer for the Pennsylvanias "Building Green in PA" program, a series of videos about green building. The video presentation features Scot Horst, sustainable materials specialist, Bill Reed, architect, LEED instructor and integrative design expert, Marcus Sheffer, LEED instructor, energy and day lighting specialist, and John Boecker, architect, LEED instructor and high performance design expert. This group has hands on experience with over 50 LEED projects as both consultants and/or project managers. One of Lower Merion School Districts natural gas powered busses will transport us from Center City to the Homasote facility. |
