First Green Roof Seminar in Philadelphia
Roofscapes, Inc., the country's premier green roof design and installation firm, presents the first professional seminar in the tri-state area devoted to the design and installation of green roofs.

Green roofs, also known as "vegetated roof covers," have been developed in Europe over the past 40 years to address the flooding, erosion, and water pollution created by the rapid run-off of stormwater from impervious surfaces in urban areas. Thin layers of living plants and light-weight growing media are installed on top of conventional roofs to replace the asphalt "footprint" of the roof with water-retaining living ecosystems. Green roofs are rapidly gaining the attention of American architects and designers for both their ecological and aesthetic impact on the urban environment.

The five-hour seminar is intended for architects, landscape architects, public policy professionals, municipal officials, and others concerned with sustainable development. Students in these fields are also welcome to attend. Leading American and German experts in green roof design will present an overview of design principles and public policy issues, combined with intensive exploration of recent design solutions.

Featured speakers include Daniel Roehr, the designer of the green roofs in Berlin’s high rise Potsdamer Platz, and Charlie Miller, the founder of Roofscapes, Inc., the most experienced green roof design and installation firm in the United States.

Other speakers include William M. Brown, AIA, designer of the EcoHouse and Millennium Habitat; Melissa Muroff, president of Higher Ground public policy consulting; Andrew Potts, a project manager with Cahill Associates, a leading stormwater management design firm; and Ed Snodgrass of Emory Knoll Farms, a national expert on green roof horticulture.

Pre-registration for the seminar, which includes meals, is required by January 19, 2004. Special rates are offered to early registrants, students, and staff members of nonprofit organizations. A detailed schedule, information about the presenters, and a registration form are available at www.roofmeadow.com
