April 23, 2004 Delaware Valley Green Building Council, a chapter of USGBC, and AIA Philadelphias Committee on the Environment are pleased to offer this tour. In the morning, attendees will visit the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's Southeast Regional Office Building in Norristown PA. The project reclaimed an urban brownfield site, establishing a state-of-the-art office building with underfloor air distribution, personal environmental controls, atrium daylighting with photosensor dimming, and rainwater collection for watering plants and flushing toilets. Exterior solar shading, CO2 monitoring, and a dedicated 100% outside air supply help reduce the HVAC load by at least 20% over an ASHRAE Standard 90.1 compliant building. The building is seeking LEED Gold certification. Opened in early February, the building is the latest in a series of three green DEP Buildings designed by architect John Boecker of L.R. Kimball. In the afternoon, a senior project architect from Croxton Collaborative Architects will host a tour of Philadelphia's Police Forensic Science Center. The renovated 1920s Art Deco public school features deep daylighting, vegetated swales for runoff control, and careful selection of products and finishes for optimal Indoor Air Quality. HVAC load reduction, achieved through envelope improvements and precise mapping of outdoor air requirements, should result in energy performance exceeding conventional construction by 50%. Croxton Collaborative Architects is known for its pioneering development of the principles of sustainable design through its National Resources Defense Council Headquarters (1988) and the National Audubon Society Headquarters (1992). Schedule: Transportation provided by Lower Merion School District on a clean natural gas powered bus. |
