Public Perception and the Acceptance of Native Landscapes – Nancy Minich

Mowed lawns, controlled edges, and exotic colors and shapes of plants have evolved to be the status quo of the American landscape. This landscape genre often defines good stewardship while less manicuring and use of "perceived" weeds – native plants – constitutes the opposite. This presentation will use case studies of watershed restoration projects – riparian buffer plantings and restorations – whose goals are to improve water quality, increase wildlife habitat, decrease NPS pollution, and reduce fragmentation of green spaces along the creeks through the use of native plants. The presentation will present design and management practices in the form of stormwater and water quality Best Management Practices, neighbors’ reactions, and anecdotes of compromises between the consultant, municipalities, and residents. It will illustrate native landscape treatments that provide residents with a level of comfort while accepting a less manicured landscape in favor of the community benefits inherent in restoring riparian buffers.

Gardening for Diversity and Sustainability –
Rick Lewandowski

Rick will explore the philosophy and practices that have shaped the evolution of the woodland gardens at Mt. Cuba Center in northern Delaware. Combining an understanding of the conditions under which plants naturally grow along with their adaptability, the staff at Mt. Cuba Center has created diverse and sustainable naturalistic gardens that are at the same time beautiful and durable. Rick will discuss the challenges and lessons of maintaining diversity in an ever-changing landscape.
