A panel discussion on
Smart Growth and Sustainable Communities
5:30 – 7:30 pm
Carpenter’s Hall, 320 Chestnut Street,
Philadelphia, PA
Continuing Ed. Credits:
This program is worth 1.5 AIA LUs (HSW).

Are current development patterns in our best interest? How can citizens and planners support economic growth while asking tough questions about the costs of "sprawl?" Contemporary land use patterns can lead to loss of habitat and farmland, excessive energy and resource consumption, inflated costs for infrastructure and public services, degraded air and water quality, and dull and repetitious landscapes. Legislators, planners and consumers concerned about "smart growth" seek feasible answers to these concerns.

Panelists will discuss applications and outcomes of smart growth, drawing from experience in the public and private sectors. Audience questions and discussion will follow.

The panelists include:
Patrick Starr, Vice President,
Pennsylvania Environmental Council.

Since 1970, the Council has served as a catalyst for improving Pennsylvania’s natural and built environments by integrating advocacy, education and implementation of community and regional action projects.

Robin L. Murray, AIA/PP, Deputy Executive Director, NJ Office of Smart Growth.
Formerly known as the Office of State Planning, the Office of Smart Growth promotes well-planned, well-managed growth that adds new homes and creates new jobs while preserving open space, farmland, and environmental resources.

Richard Hankin, Partner, Hankin Group.
The Hankin Group develops commercial and residential properties that minimize the need for and the appearance of the automobile and maximize a lifestyle based on ‘walkability.’

Jim Maneri, Senior Vice President, Director of New Business Development, Liberty Property Trust.
Liberty Property Trust is a publicly traded real estate company which purchases, manages, and develops office and industrial properties throughout the United States and the United Kingdom.
