Green Building Tour: Memorial Middle School
Freehold, NJ
10:15 am - 5:00 pm
Continuing Ed. Credits:
This program is worth 3.0 AIA/CES LUs(HSW).

The Delaware Valley Green Building Council and
AIA Philadelphia's Committee on the Environment invite you for this green building tour. Members of the design team will present lessons learned and technology innovations from the new Memorial Middle School (in Freehold, NJ). The design of this school conformed to a LEED Silver Certification level; bids came in at $131/sf, $7/sf under budget.

Materials and Resources
• The construction waste management policy required recycling of a minimum 75% of all construction debris materials.
• The concrete, steel, CMU, interior wainscoting, ceiling tile, toilet partitions, wall board and carpeting have a minimum of 20% post consumer or 40% post industrial content.

Environmental Quality
• One hundred percent outside air constantly flushes the building; three levels of filtration provide almost “clean room” quality indoor air.
• Interior finishes such as carpet, paint, wood, stains, and furniture fabric were specified with low or zero VOC content and no formaldehyde.

Energy Efficiency
• Models of the HVAC system showed a 60% reduction in energy consumtion compared to ASHRAE 90.1 requirements. The regenerative dual duct system uses thermal storage, two stages of evaporative cooling, and heat recovery, allowing two 40-ton chillers to fully air-condition 70,000 sq. ft. with 40% redundancy and 20% expansion capability. For more information, see "Innovation Exploration" by Dr. Stanley Mumma in Engineered Systems (April 2005).
• A high reflectance roof coating reduces summer cooling load by up to 30%.
• Indirect flourescent lighting throughout the school uses 33% of the energy that standard direct fluorescent fixtures require.

Sustainable Sites
• Site lighting is specifically designed to “stay on site,” avoiding light pollution.
• The design team will also discuss the installation of two 50 kW photovoltaic systems at the adjacent Adelphia Elementary School.
