Green Building Tour:
Swarthmore College Unified Science Center
11:45 am - 3:45 pm
Swarthmore College
500 College Avenue, Swarthmore, PA 19081

Continuing Ed. Credits:
This program is worth 3.5 AIA/CES (HSW) LUs.

The Delaware Valley Green Building Council,
AIA Philadelphia's Committee on the Environment, and the Society for College and University Planning invite you to attend an exciting green building tour at Swarthmore College. Representatives from the design team and Swarthmore College will present this LEED-certified 140,000 sq. ft. building. The Unified Science Center connects and reuses several existing buildings; it features an iconic butterfly roof that captures stormwater, extensive integration of local stone and wood, and generous daylight for social and teaching spaces. The building received numerous awards, including the 2005 Boston Society of Architects / Society for College and University Planning's Educational Facility Design Citation and the 2005 AIA New York State Design Award.

A panel discussion will present lessons learned that may be helpful to building owners planning and constructing other educational buildings. Swarthmore's team will narrate the planning process, including genesis of the client-consultant relationship. The design architects will review the building's salient architectural features and their connection to Swarthmore's priorities. Swarthmore's team will discuss the costs and benefits of LEED certification; the commissioning agent will present a payback analysis for the commissioning.
