Wednesday, November 8, 2006 Continuing Education Credits: Our towns are losing their sense of community to the all too familiar pattern of commercial and residential development known as sprawl. An alternative means of development, one which preserves our communities and open space for future generations is needed. This seminar provides an introduction to what we can do to promote sustainable development in our communities. There are many terms used today in discussing efforts to reduce sprawl: green urbanism, sustainable development, sustainable communities/cities, new urbanism, anti sprawl or Smart Growth. Whichever title one may use, each captures the important roles municipalities have in shaping more sustainable places, communities and lifestyles. We need communities that reflect a new urbanism, which is dramatically more ecological in design and functioning and has ecological limits at its core. The seminar approaches this topic from three different, but related, viewpoints to Smart Growth: advocacy to promote change in our current planning codes and regulations; planning to create the means by which we can implement these ideals into the municipal level; and community from the viewpoint of a local municipality which implemented Smart Growth standards into their ordinances and the lessons they wish to share. Municipal officials, designers and planners are encouraged to attend.
