Friday, March 16, 2007 Continuing Ed. Credits: Join us on a tour of Muhlenberg's new green "home" for their life sciences program. The 47,000-square foot New Science Building houses the life sciences program at Muhlenberg College. The building recently opened for the 2006 fall semester and is the College’s first attempt to obtain a LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) rating. Some of the green highlights of the building include: waterless urinals; low-flow toilets and faucets; two total energy, or enthalpy wheels as part of the heating, ventilating and air conditioning system; low-emissivity windows; wood products certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC); lab casework composed of agriboard; paints, adhesives, and sealants that contain low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs); a green housekeeping program; and an educational outreach program, which includes the use of television monitors to educate visitors about the building’s green features. Ballinger served as the architect and engineer for the building, and Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. was the construction manager. Muhlenberg anticipates a rating of LEED certified for their New Science Building. The Provost of Muhlenberg College, Dr. Marjorie Hass, will be giving an introductory presentation. The tour will be led by representatives from Ballinger, the architect and engineer for the building, and Whiting-Turner Contracting Co., the construction manager. Schedule: Transportation provided by Lower Merion School District on a natural gas-powered bus. |
