Aerzen USA’s LEED Gold Headquarters creates a statement of possibility for manufacturing facilities that are environmentally responsible, worker-friendly, cost competitive, and architecturally significant. The project includes an 8,000 SF office space and 34,000 SF of “lean manufacturing,” and storage areas.
This project features the first commercial application of straw bale in Pennsylvania, using straw grown within 10 miles of the site. Re:Vision selected Straw bale walls for their unparalleled ability to insulate (R-42), minimal embodied energy, appropriateness for an organic design, and contribution to the local economy. Key to the building’s environmental response is its relationship to the path of the sun and focus on superior daylight for office and shop workers alike.
In the shop, low-tech earth tubes naturally cool air by passing it underneath the building, while large fans draw hot air up and let it escape through operable clerestories. In the office, a ground source heat pump uses six 300’ deep wells to exchange their temperature with the ground to provide efficient air conditioning as well as heating.
The natural surroundings are celebrated through nature trails as well as native meadows and vegetated swales that account for 100% of infiltrated stormwater mitigation on site.
Internally, the design connects workers not only to the environment but to each other. Inclusion of the entire company in a 5-day integrated design charrette led to architecture that responds uniquely to how Aerzen works and how they want to grow. For example, in the nexus that links the shop and the office is a wall-to-wall window that facilitates communication and provides a strong visual reminder of the dual nature of the business.
