Description:

Eight years after Corporate Headquarters Building 701 was completed as a ‘green’ building, Armstrong World Industries worked with Re:Vision Architecture to undertake a series of additional design and operational improvements to fully optimize the building and secure a LEED-Platinum rating from the US Green Building Council under the LEED For Existing Buildings (EB) program. In the end, Building 701 became the fifth building nationwide to achieve LEED-EB Platinum. The achievement set an example for the corporate world, promoting environmental responsibility and consciousness.

Building 701’s Energy Star designation in 2006 recognizes the facility as performing in the top 25% of energy efficient buildings in the United States. In addition to energy performance, the improvements incorporated indoor and outdoor environments. Renovations included improving sources of day lighting, incorporating environmentally friendly materials, superior acoustics, and waste water management. The landscape surrounding the building was planted to maintain a healthy and self-sustainable environment, organized to minimize run-off and site erosion.

Of particular importance to Armstrong, RVA secured an innovation credit for superior acoustical performance of the open office plan which features Armstrong’s acoustical products.

Green Highlights:
• LEED-EB Platinum Rating
• Creation of an incentivized carpooling program for entire Armstrong campus
• Improved energy use via corrective repairs and commissioning, resulting in the Energy Star award
• Over 50% reduction in water use (compared to LEED-EB baseline)
• Purchase of clean, wind-generated electricity to offset 75% of total building energy usage
• Improved recycling rate to greater than 64%
• Purchase of more environmentally-friendly consumable products
• Adoption of comprehensive ‘green’ cleaning program
• Extension of some LEED-EB ‘green’ initiatives to other buildings on the Armstrong campus
