Description:

BCCF Headquarters is more than a physical building project—it is a community building project. Through a collaborative process, educational outreach, and compelling design, the project has created a ripple effect by inspiring other owners and developers to build more sustainably. With this larger community goal in mind, BCCF challenged the team to set an example of environmental stewardship that is economically defensible. Platinum LEED certification was achieved using sustainable strategies that have a financial return within a 10 year period while contributing towards a high-quality, healthful building.

As a Foundation, it was important for BCCF to convey a sense of longevity and solidity. In a nod both to past and future, the building sensitively blends traditional design elements with contemporary forms and materials that respond to environmental factors. The building is slightly skewed off the street grid to face directly south for optimum passive solar gain, and as a public gesture of the project’s environmental goals. Smart choices allowed the building to achieve a projected 43% cost savings in energy and 85% savings in potable water. Within the building, visitors delight in seeing green roof terraces, a winding central stair made of wood reclaimed from the Coney Island Pier, and stormwater flowing through a clear pipe on its way to a cistern where it is stored for toilet flushing.
