Description:

Following WRT's comprehensive park master plan, this $4.6 million restoration and adaptive reuse of the historic Blue Ball Dairy Barn creates a focal point for Alapocas Run State Park that accomodates a visitor's center, a museum, and an event facility. A new addition houses support facilities, restrooms, and offices, as well as catering and vending services. Undertaken in collaboration with John Milner Associates, the design involved the careful integration of green building techniques with historic preservation, and resulted in a complementary pairing of contemporary and historical structures. Sustainable features of the new facility include an energy-efficient building envelope, a mechanical system that did not destroy the historic character, and an ecological approach to stormwater management. A LEEDSilver rating is anticipated for the project.
