Description:
The Wister Education Center and Greenhouse, designed by Archer & Buchanan Architecture, Ltd. of West Chester, PA, is a sustainably designed facility, LEED GOLD certified by the US Green Building Council. The Wister Center serves the staff and volunteers of The Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College in their mission "for the encouragement of horticulture in its broadest sense." The state-of-the-art greenhouse provides space for plant propagation, overwintering, cultivation and display. The technologically rich education center provides a venue for hands-on workshops, educational seminars and social gatherings. The Arboretum and Wister Center are supported by over 100 dedicated volunteers and serves over 35,000 visitors annually.
“After nearly a decade of planning and fund raising and a year of construction, all of us at the Scott Arboretum are extremely excited to see the Wister Education Center and Greenhouse open,” said Claire Sawyers, director, Scott Arboretum. “At last we have a space designed for hands-on horticultural educational programs, where soil and pots, plants and people can flourish.”
